The Boys and Girls Club of Halifax County has been on the forefront of youth servcies since 1998. The mission of the Boys and Girls Club of Halifax County is to inspire and enable all young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens. With an afterschool program unmatched, the club has served over 2000 youth since opening its doors.

The club also provides a structured summer program for 8 weeks during June, July, and August. Our goal is to provide after school and summer programs that provide youth with activities in five core service areas. Children are one of our most valuable resources. They are the future leaders of our country. It is our duty to arm them with the knowledge, education, and desidre to help make our world a better place. We hope that through our programs we can help set them on their way armed with that knowledge they will need to make the right choices in life.

These areas include the following:

  • Character and Leadership Development: Empowers youth to support and influence their Club and community, sustain meaningful relationships with others, develop a positive self-image, and respect their own and others cultural identities. (i.e. Group clubs, community service projects, Youth of the Year, youth discussions.)
  • Education and Career Development: Enables youth to become proficient in basic educational disciplines, apply learning to everyday situations and embrace technology to achieve success in a career (i.e. Power Hour homework assistance program, career prep, finance club, Ultimate Journey outdoor education program)
  • Health and Life Skills: Develop young people's capacity to engage in positive behaviors that nurture their own well-being, set personal goals and live successfully as self-sufficient adults (i.e. SMART Moves decision making programs, HIV Aids Education, personal hygiene)
  • The Arts: Enables youth to develop their creativity and cultural awareness through knowledge and appreciation of the visual arts, crafts, performing arts, and creative writing (i.e. Story telling, arts and crafts, step team, field trips to cultural events, fine arts competition, poem contests, dance, performances at various events)
  • Sports, Fitness, and Recreation: Develops fitness, positive use of leisure time, skills for stress management, appreciation for the environment and social skills (i.e. Team and individual sports, board and table games, athletic leagues, basketball camps, track meets, and exercise activities)

Many programs that are being offered by the Boys and Girls Club would not be possible without the support of our local United Way. The club relies on the Roanoke Valley United Way to help support programs such as our SMART Moves Program (the programs helps kids to understand the dangers of drugs, alcohol, gang activity, etc.), our Power Hour Program (after school tutoring program), Street SMARTS, "Teen Night", and many other programs.
